What is a Healing Crisis?
Detoxification with clay can provide many benefits. Clay has been used for centuries to regulate the digestive system, provide energy, reduce pain and to stimulate the immune system. But it is important to keep in mind, detoxification is not a walk in the park. A healing crisis can occur during clay detoxification.
The Herxheimer Reaction is the medical term for a healing crisis. The Herxheimer Reaction occurs because the detoxification process is releasing toxins from the body’s cells at a rapid rate. The major organs of the body are being bombarded with these toxins, and they are unable to eliminate them quickly enough. As the toxins circulate through the body, they can produce undesirable symptoms.
Some individuals will have mild to moderate symptoms while others may have severe symptoms. Individuals who have been sick for a long period of time will have more severe symptoms as the body detoxifies itself. Not everyone will have the same healing crisis symptoms.
Symptoms of a Healing Crisis
The following can be symptoms of a healing crisis:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Increase muscle or joint pain
- Mood Swings
- Sinus Congestion
- Skin Eruptions such as a rash, boils or hives
- Brain Fog
- Night Sweats
The onset of these symptoms can happen within a few hours of taking the clay detox, or they may start a few days or even a few weeks after starting the detoxification. You must remember, a healing crisis, while it may be uncomfortable, is not a bad thing. It is proof your detoxification is working. You will feel really bad before you start to feel better.
How to Deal With a Healing Crisis
There are things you can do to make a healing crisis a little more tolerable. First of all, it is very important you drink plenty of water. This will help flush the toxins from your system and speed up the healing crisis.
Moderate exercise is important during a healing crisis. Brisk walking, cycling or swimming will be beneficial. Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body which can help the major organs function better to eliminate toxins. Sweating will also help to eliminate toxins from the body.
Pay attention to your body. If you start to feel extremely tired, try to get some rest. Sleep is important to the healing process. Make sure your bowels move everyday. Daily bowel movements are important for flushing toxins out of your system. If you are having trouble with constipation, increase your fiber intake by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables.
It may be tempting to take medicine to counteract the symptoms you may be having. For example, if you develop diarrhea, you may think you need to take something to stop it. However, if you take medication it can interfere with the detoxifying process. If you have diarrhea, increase your fluid intake to stay hydrated and the diarrhea should stop on its own.
A healing crisis can be very uncomfortable, but you will better after it is over. If you have prolonged symptoms that do not seem to be getting better after several days, it is a good idea to consult with your doctor. There may be a medical reason for your symptoms. Make sure you let your doctor know you are doing a detoxification.
